Transatlantic Partnership Agreement Signed by the University of Cincinnati and the University Alliance Ruhr

On a recent visit to Cincinnati, representatives of the University of Cincinnati, the University of Duisburg-Essen and the university Alliance Ruhr New York signed a Memorandum of understanding that will serve as the foundation of collaborations in the fields of German Studies, Urban Studies, and Engineering.

The agreement includes the joint mentoring of doctoral candidates by the Faculty of Humanities in Duisburg-Essen and the College of Arts and Sciences in Cincinnati. The institutions also agreed on organizing joined symposia and conferences to promote their research collaborations. Likewise, the Transatlantic Seminar that has been organized by Professors Todd Herzog (Cincinnati) and Rolf Parr (Duisburg-Essen) since 2012 will continue to bring together graduate students and faculty from both sides of the Atlantic.

Having started as a collaboration between the German Departments at both universities, a visit of representatives from the University of Cincinnati in the Ruhr are in 2018 has strengthened and expanded the scope of the collaboration. Beyond German Studies and Urban Studies, both universities have significant research strengths in Public Health, Water Science, Entrepreneurship and Engineering.

The University of Cincinnati, founded in 1819, is one of the leading public research universities in the U.S. with more than 46,000 students. Both the University of Cincinnati and the University Alliance Ruhr share not only their interdisciplinary research focus on urban systems but they are also located in formerly heavily industrialized regions that confront similar challenges of globalizing marketys and changing economies.
